Passover Landscapes: Illuminations on the Exodus

Passover Landscapes represents a five-year journey of religious learning and art. Illuminated and authored by Rabbi Matthew L. Berkowitz and inspired by an original commission for a new family haggadah for Dedee and Stephen Lovell, Passover Landscapes offers a unique window into the Passover seder experience. The project consists of three components: a portfolio of twenty-seven giclée prints (including three papercuts), a haggadah, and a book of commentary. It is a piece rich with influences and history, bringing the experience of the Exodus to a deeper and more meaningful level. The portfolio is entirely produced in Israel, bound in Jerusalem with end papers made of parsley in Zichron Yaakov, inspired by manuscripts from the Rare Book Room of The Jewish Theological Seminary (NYC), and woven together by a painting of a characteristic Israel landscape.

The clamshell case of the portfolio was handmade by Shevach Black (Omanut HaKricha, Jerusalem). Giclee prints and overall production: Jerusalem Fine Art Prints (Yair Medina), Talpiot, Jerusalem.

Passover Landscapes is a Limited Edition of two hundred and fifty complete sets with twenty-five additional artist proofs.

The portfolio has been acquired by Yale University, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, synagogues across North America, and private collectors; it has been exhibited at James Francis Trezza Gallery (Madison Avenue, NYC), Yeshiva University Museum (NYC), Sinai Temple (Los Angeles), and The Schocken Institute (Jerusalem), Kol HaOt Gallery (Jerusalem).

The current selling price of the portfolio: $15,000 USD

“If Rabbi Berkowitz had only written the text of this haggadah, its creativity and insight would have been sufficient – dayenu. Had he only created the illustrations, his artistry would have more than spoken for itself – dayenu. But it is the combination of these two creative arenas, interwoven and inseparable, that makes this haggadah different from any I have encountered … truly one of a kind. ” Larry S. Moses, President Emeritus, The Wexner Foundation

“Rabbi Berkowitz’s artistic celebration of freedom inspires us to reflect on our history of exile and redemption and rededicate our commitment to Jewish survival.” Jean Bloch Rosensaft, Director, Museum Exhibitions, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion

“… A visual feast. His strong lettering and vibrant images, his sensitive English rendering of the Hebrew text, and penetrating commentary appeal to the heart as much as to the mind. The artwork pulsates with landscapes of Israel, insights of midrash, and subtleties of the Hebrew language. Rabbi Berkowitz has praised God with every skill at his disposal …”, Dr. Ismar Schorsch, Rabbi Herman Abramovitz Professor of Jewish History & Chancellor Emeritus, The Jewish Theological Seminary

“The Lovell Haggadah is a testament to the soaring places that the human imagination can touch when the heart combines devotion to text with devotion to esthetics. Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz of Boca Raton and Jerusalem is the illuminator, translator and commentator of this Haggadah. He is supremely talented. And we are the beneficiary of his talents. Rabbi Berkowitz provides three distinct entry points to the mystery and wonder of the seder experience for the user of this Haggadah: the book’s liturgy, its artwork and commentary. Each is its own magical pathway to new thoughts and reflections on our participation in the story of the Exodus. The production values of the text are of a very high quality. The layout calls us to each page. The inter-relationships among space, illustration and text is pleasing and provocative. The cream colour and quality of the paper immediately set this Haggadah apart. Moreover, and perhaps especially, Berkowitz’s drawings are bold and deeply evocative.” Mordechai Ben-Dat, Editor, The Canadian Jewish News, March 26, 2009

“The most impressive new haggadah of the year is by far The Lovell Haggadah…The Lovell Haggadah is profound, and aimed at the minds, the eyes, and the hearts of adults. The book is, first of all, a visual delight…Creator Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz provides discussion questions, allowing opportunities for the seder leader to encourage guests to truly think about the meanings of the oft-recited words. And he provides a number of projects for the children to do as well, so that they can feel part of the seder.” Rabbi Jack Reimer, SDJJ Jewish Reader, April 2008
