Plate 4. Bread of Affliction

This illustration underscores several messages. First, the festive meal of Rav Huna is bracketed top and bottom by history—slavery and redemption. We move stylistically from the slavery of Egypt to the redemption of Jerusalem. We transition from slavery to redemption by taking care of the needs of the poor and by inviting guests, by broadening our definition of family to include the community.
